Each year through parades, fireworks and music, Americans celebrate a number of holidays in the spring and summer months. This package includes eight DVDs that recall the events and songs that commemorate the waving of the red, white and blue.
The Cover Story segment follows a group of veterans on an Honor Flight as they view monuments and tour places of interest to the military in the Washington, D.C. area. There is moving footage of the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown in Arlington National Cemetery, as well as scenes from the memorials to the veterans of World War II, Korea and Vietnam.
There's a definite patriotic feel to the first episode in our Timeless Trivia series. Questions about the flag, famous patriots and historic places tied to our heritage are interspersed with photos and film. A delightful segment called the American Songbook is entertaining as well as informative. It traces the nation's music from the beginning.
Our Sentimental Entertainers don their red, white and blue outfits for many of the selections in this popular video. Viewers tap their feet and sing along to tunes like Grand Old Flag, My Country 'Tis of Thee and America the Beautiful. On-screen lyrics are now an option on all 20 sing-along videos.
For this Cover Story we visit two locations in Waubeka, Wisconsin, which is where Flag Day began. One of the stops was at the former Stony Hill School where Bernard Cigrand, a young teacher, placed a flag in a bottle and told his students to write an essay about it. That was in 1885. These days there are three museum rooms with artifacts and information about Waubeka, known as the birthplace of Flag Day.
The questions, answers and commentary in this episode of Timeless Trivia focus on the various commanders-in-chief throughout the years. From the founding fathers who were the earliest presidents down to the chief executives of present day. Our film clips include excerpts of a Fireside Chat by Franklin Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy taking the oath of office.
This volume begins with a solo by Nancy James, the host of Sentimental Reflections, singing the Star Spangled Banner. But there are plenty more familiar songs to complement the red, white and blue of the costumes and the settings for these songs. The theme songs for the service branches are included in this sections of songs as are the Battle Cry of Freedom, Johnny Has Gone For a Soldier and Stars & Stripes Forever.
The Memorial Day ceremony at Fort Snelling in Minneapolis is a solemn occasion. Lots of veterans and associated groups turn out to watch the pageantry of uniformed vets marching to their places. There is also a rifle salute from a memorial national rifle squad. There were also patriotic displays of military uniforms and equipment at the original Fort Snelling.
There are several bands that wear Air Force blue, but the one that gave the concert we attended is considered the premier band of the Air Force. Their performance was part of a midwest tour. With 58 members, they put on quite a show, mixing marching and patriotic music with more modern selections.

We join citizens of Hamilton, Ohio for their daylong celebration of Independence Day. There's a great parade through the center of town featuring marching bands, baton twirlers, clowns, Shriners on funny vehicles and flags galore. There's also patriotic music and singing on the grounds of city hall. All part of a great midwestern 4th of July.
This Cover Story has plenty of fireworks from a company whose expertise is nationally-known. On a recent Fourth of July weekend, the company was putting on 80 different displays. This segment also tells the story behind the Rozzi family, which formed their fireworks company in Italy more than 100 years ago.
The patriotic holidays are covered well in this Timeless Trivia episode. There is some great historic film of a World War I cannon being delivered to a town in New York in the early 1920s.
